Gold silk is a "show-off" filament: you print with it so people ask "where did you buy that?". In February 2021 I tested AzureFilm's Silk Gold PLA, made in Slovenia, and that's exactly what happened.

A premium unboxing

AzureFilm is based in Sežana, Slovenia, very close to the Italian border and Trieste, and they kindly sent me some spools to test. The unboxing is a premium experience: a nice white box, a vacuum-sealed spool with silica gel inside, and a transparent spool with the filament wound and secured very neatly.

Calibration prints

The CaliCat never misses, because it tells you about stringing, temperature and retraction. This one came out flawless. You can see a bit of infill, but that's because I set very thin outer walls. A calibration cube showed off the silky surface, and it really feels like silk to the touch.

It prints just like PLA, only a little hotter. I used the suggested 220 °C with no other special settings. I also printed a huge replica of a nozzle that looks like real brass, part of a project I'd show in another video.

Vases and useful pieces

I love vase mode for testing "show-off" filaments. One vase from Thingiverse came out brilliant, so I printed another, a low-poly vase that plays with light. My tip for vase mode: double the extrusion width. I use a 0.4 mm nozzle with a 0.8 mm line width. It makes the walls stronger so they don't break when you take them off the bed.

Useful things are harder with a filament this pretty: it isn't meant for bolts or parts that rub together. But I printed a makeup pencil holder for my wife (I had to take it back from her bathroom to film it) and a desk organiser for her pens and post-its. Both look like something you'd buy in a shop, and they came out of my Artillery Genius.

Would I buy it?

Definitely, for anything that will be on display. At the time it cost on average 20 to 25 euros delivered. Having guests ask where you bought something, and answering "I 3D printed it", is a great feeling, and good materials help you get there.
