Yes, I got a new tattoo, and no, it won't be the last one. A friend lent me the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and I took it to the tattoo studio, where there was almost no light. Here's my fast review.

Shot under the needle

The b-roll at the start of the video was filmed while Giuseppe was having fun on my arm (it got pretty painful). I'd been waiting to try this lens for a while, so a dim tattoo studio was the perfect test.

The lens

This is the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for Sony, made for APS-C sensors, so it gives you a field of view similar to a 24mm on full frame. It's from Sigma's Contemporary line, not the Art series, but the image quality is so high it could easily belong there. In size it's close to the 18-105mm, and the 18-105 is a bit lighter.

The autofocus is extremely quiet, you can't hear it moving at all, and it's crazy fast, even in low light with just some daylight coming through a window. In my experience it focuses better than the native Sony lens.

Gimbal and bokeh

It works fine on my Zhiyun Crane V2, but it's a bit front-heavy so you need to balance it well. Having such a wide, fast lens on a gimbal is really nice. And this lens is the king of bokeh: smooth and round, which makes everything look so cinematic, for video and for photos.

Worth it?

Yes. At around $399 / €399 back in 2018, the results are awesome for the price. A great purchase if you want to create cinematic videos.
