Best BUDGET DRONE for BEGINNERS // 2019

People keep asking me which drone they should start with. At the end of 2018 my answer wasn't a DJI at all, but a cheap, well-built drone with GPS: the MJX Bugs 5W.

Why not start with a DJI?

Kids and friends see me flying a Mavic Pro, a Spark, a Phantom or an Anafi, and they ask what drone to buy first. I started with a DJI Spark and it was good, but it's already a bit professional (I'm still paying it off). If you've never flown before, there's a cheaper way in.

The MJX Bugs 5W

It's the entry level just before DJI. It has GPS, a 1080p camera and brushless motors. There's no gimbal, just a shock absorber. With its battery you get about 15 minutes of flight time. It has some nice features: point of interest, where you pick something and the drone circles around it (it works pretty decently), a low-battery warning, and follow me. Follow me doesn't work like DJI's: you don't draw a box to track you, the drone just follows your phone. There's no obstacle avoidance either, but then not even the Anafi has that.

I don't want to get too technical. You buy this because you've never had a drone, or for the kids, not because you're already a pilot. For me it was the best of the low-budget drones, and a great one to start with in 2019. I was having a lot of fun with it, and I can do crazy stuff with it that I'd never try with my Mavic Pro.
